Meeting 856 on 24 May - Theme of Travel

Tempted as I was to issue a moratorium for this entry (the word of the night as introduced by Kerry), I shall instead keep it brief.

An inspiring meeting, and the first for some time without any guests, other than Sir Richard Branson during the round robin. If you know somebody who would enjoy and benefit from Toastmasters, why not bring them along as a guest? Encouraging new members keeps the club strong and dynamic. Tonight's meeting was special for having lots of firsts, including an icebreaker speech by Lynda; a table topic by Jennine; and a toast & mission statement by Harry and Jennine.

Please note the next meeting is in three weeks, on Tuesday 14 June. Please bring money for the changeover dinner on Tuesday 28 June. Only members and invited, pre-paid guests will be able to attend the meeting on 28 June, so if anybody contacts you with interest to attend a future meeting, please make them aware of this exception to our standard rule of no charge for guests.

A particular thank you to Kerry and Raider for attending the meeting to complete their roles before departing for other commitments. As John pointed out, this showed commendable commitment to the club and their assigned duties.

Meeting 855 - Theme Zodiac

Written by a Piscean, apparently the most metaphysically orientated of all the symbols, you may be expecting this blog post to be a little emotional and nostalgic; but overall calm, considerate and compassionate. I shall do my best ...

Meeting 855 was once again a challenging, informative and interesting night. The theme allowed each of us to speculate whether our zodiac sign matched our personalities, and that of other club members.

Liz Wel as Toastmaster, her first time in this role, did an excellent job, having researched comments to make between segments, introducing the next segment and keeping the meeting moving. Well done.

Dave Y as acting sargeant at arms, and Trish as acting acting president fulfilled their roles with style. Jennine and Harry were voted in and will be inducted at the next meeting.

With confidence and enthusiasm Kerry offered us the opportunity to win a bag of Tupperware Treats, and this Piscean was tempted to display some "rare out of control behaviour with serious consequences" when the winner was announced to be John instead of herself.

June challenged Kerry, Tony and Raider with themed table topics; evaluated well by Dave H.

Trish with her speech Tears of the Moon and a little town from an advanced communicator manual had us all throughly looking forward to our stay in Broome; and Kylie presented five key photography techniques, concluding that If all else fails, read the instruction manual.

John gave an educational about introducing a guest speaker, and an outline will be included in a future newsletter. The key points to include are: why this speaker, why this time, why this subject and why this audience. Annette provided a great example.

Annette's delivery of Henry Lawson's The Teams was delightful.

Trophies were presented to (with photo by Sharyn - didn't she listen carefully to the photography tips!)

Meeting 853 on 12 April 2011 - Theme of Easter

With enough mentions of chocolate in one evening to send us all into a feeding frenzy, it was once again an entertaining evening at Sandgate Toastmasters.

Meriel slipped easily into the role of president while our current president Marlene gallavants the world - hello if you've not been able to resist a quick peek into the happenings in your absence, Marlene!

Two guests were welcomed, Michelle from Good Morning Toastmasters, and Carmila, trialing our meeting for the first time. Lovely to have you join us, come again soon.

Kerry and Lynda received their badges, having been inducted in previous meetings.

Tony provided a brilliant word for us to try - Effulgent, meaning bright or radiant - my first attempt was far from bright, however my blush perhaps a little radiant. John quipped that he thought it should refer to a drunk man. John's Table Topics were far from that of a drunk man, with curly statements of religion, traditions, road accidents and country differences - participants Nicole, David Y, Leesa, Rhys and June provided clever replies. Lynda's well delivered Round Robin was suitably easier, with members sharing their most vivid childhood memory of Easter.

Prepared speeches were presented by Monica, who encouraged us to give composting a go, Raider, who reminded us that "even divine love can have its challenges", and Kerry, with her icebreaker speech entitled "Where Do I Belong?. The evaluators had an easy time finding postive points for each, and had to work harder to determine points for improvement.

Sharyn as grammarian raised the bar a little higher, not limiting herself to counting "ums" and "ahs", but also "so" and "actually". These are fillers, and Sharyn suggested a pause would be more appropriate.

Jonathon with his "Three for the Price of One" book review of the Millenium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson has at least some of us sorted with our next library choice.

Dave was the lucky winner of the Easter raffle, presented with great skill by Nicole. There was talk of tackling him to the ground to relieve him of his prize - Lindt chocolates, Brumbys Hot Cross Buns and Twinings Teas. Instead we are all dropping into his place one by one over Easter.

Lastly, congratulations to June for tackling a general evaluation with Sharyn's assistance. It was detailed and informative.

Next meeting Tuesday 26 April - Anzac Day.

Don't forget to nominate yourself or someone else (with their permission) by email to Meriel for the executive roles, as voting will happen on Tuesday 10 May - you do not have to be able attend that meeing to accept a nomination.

David Young as acting Sargeant at Arms started the meeting as it was to progress - relaxed and enjoyable.

Welcome to our guests Rod & Cindy; and Jennine & Harry. Congratulations for participating in the round robin! We hope you come again.

Dave, June and David entertained with excellent speeches. Dave gave a dramatic interpretive reading entitled Flight of Terror; June convinced us that wherever you are in the world, the side you drive on is the right side, and the other side is the wrong side; and David shared his impressive knowledge of the legends of the Glasshouse Mountains.

Kerry was inducted to the club, with Meriel announced as her mentor for the next 6 - 12 months.

Lynda, inducted at the last meeting, presented a great raffle, won by Harry.

We heard some excellent speeches by Rhys and Trish, and an Educational Session by Sharyn.

The supper break was a good time to socialise.
