Meeting 919 "All Creatures Great and Small"

It was good to have our President Liz We back from her trip.

Sharyn was Toastmaster, looking great in her theme related dress. Did you notice it had creatures printed on it?
Sharyn
Creatures great & small

Our previous guests guests, Malcolm and D'sley were welcomed back, also a mystery gentleman who arrived during the meeting and sat for a few minutes before announcing he had walked into the wrong place and promptly left!

Round Robin Master Pam invited us to tell about a pet we have had. There were many amusing stories, and it seems that most of our members own a dog or cat.

Peter, who has just returned from New Zealand, had some Table Topics about New Zealand animals for for Annette, Jim, Amanda and Liz We.

Annette

Jim

Liz We
They were evaluated by Marlene and Inge. This was Inge's first attempt at evaluating.

John S
John S presented a speech titled "Hear, Hear!" about the difficulties experienced by the hearing impaired.
Some of the suggestions he made for us were,
Speak clearly, don't shout.
Speak face to face, don't turn away when speaking.
Don't keep repeating the same phrase word for word, try using alternate words.

We used the "Buddy" system of evaluating - a new evaluator was teamed with a more experienced one. Leesa and Jim made an excellent team.

John T
John T's speech was "Are We Still a Weird Mob?" an entertaining look at the quirks of Australians.
Amanda & Nick
Amanda and Nick made another great evaluation team. It was Nick's first evaluation.

Hollie
Other first timers were our Time Keepers Maureen and Hollie. Neither had performed the task before. They kept the meeting running on time.

In the absence of our third speaker, (Get well soon Trish!) Marlene presented an educational session on the duties of a Vice President Education. (Clink link for transcript.) Club Officer elections will be held in May and we are expecting to be inundated with volunteers for the job!

Annette chaired the business session and guided us skilfully through some motions and amendments. The main business items discussed were,
Change Over Dinner on the 24th June,
Information Stall at the Einbunpin Festival on the 27th July,
40th Anniversary Dinner on the 12th August.

Maureen
Maureen's raffle, a bag of goodies, including  DVD's , books, cup and coasters was won by one of our guests, Malcolm.

President Liz We conducted the General Evaluation, then presented the evenings awards to Annette (Best Table Topic, John T (Best Speech,) Amanda & Nick (Best Evaluation,) Jim & Hollie -tie (Personal Best,) and Sharyn (Best Contribution.)

Meeting 916 "Summer Blues"

  John T
Competent Communicator
Congratulations to John T on completing the final project in the Competent Communicator Manual! His speech, "Living a good Life and the Happiness Trap" was an inspiration to us all.

Another successful Toastmaster was Trish, who completed the Advanced Manual, "Speeches by Management." Trish asked us to imagine we were residents of the small town, "Kickatinalong" who were concerned about the introduction of a MacDonald's restaurant  in  the area. Trish skilfully and diplomatically handled the questions and objections that were raised.

Trish
The speeches were evaluated by John S and Marlene.

Liz Wo
We are thinking of holding an Interpretive Reading Contest soon, so Liz Wo gave us a an entertaining demonstration of Interpretive Reading with a selection from  "Not Another Book about Italy."

You can find tips on Interpretive Reading in our online handbook.

In keeping with the theme, Toastmaster Dave had prepared quotes and poems about summer.

Hollie's Round Robin was, " What will you miss most when summer is over." The answers were varied - some will miss the summer activities, while others will glad when the heat has ended.

Inge had Table Topics for Tilly, Maureen and Leesa.

"If your doctor ordered more exercise, what kind of exercise would you choose?"
"Would you prefer to get your exercise at the beach, or in a shopping centre?"
"How would you entertain children in Summer?"

Tilly's Table Topics for Nick, Nicole and  Pam were phrases:

"If I could I would...."

"When I think blue..."
