We have a winner!

Annette - First Place Evaluation
We were thrilled to see Annette win first place in the Evaluation Contest at the Area 8 Conference. She also came third in the International Speech Contest. Annette will go on to compete against all the clubs in the Metropolitan Division on the 16th March next year.

Dave performed well in the Table Topics Contest. We are proud of both our competitors.

Sharyn was great in her role of Contest Chairman.

Area 8 consists of 6 Toastmasters clubs - Pines,  Healthy Chatterers, Bunya, Peninsula, Narangba Valley, and Sandgate. It is always good to meet old & new friends from other Toastmasters clubs.

The food from Tommy Tucker's Takeaway was excellent & plenty of it.

Meeting 888 "Practice Makes Perfect"

Possums
No, this photo has nothing to do with Toastmasters. But it's the reason I was late for the meeting. The possums that had been living in my ceiling had been trapped & I had to wait until after dark before setting them  free. I just had to show you because they are so cute!

So I missed the beginning of the meeting & arrived during the Table Topics. Monica had chosen some excellent topics - they were brief, no long introduction needed and could be answered by anyone. (At least in theory.)

The topics were, "I should have known," "They were wrong," "It's going to take time," and "It's the best option for me." They were answered by Terry, Robert, Dave and Anne.
Amanda

Amanda evaluated the Table Topics. It was her first time as evaluator and she handled it very well.

A lot of our members were absent.  Some were ill, some on holiday and a few had studies. It was good to have our guests Jaya and Christine back again as well as Anne, a first time visitor.

Toastmaster Rhys kept the meeting running smoothly.

Maureen presented her second speech, entitled "Holiday Times" and had some helpful suggestions to make holidays stress free.
John T's speech, his second also, was "Australia - Where to Now?" with a lot of tongue in cheek humour.

The speeches were evaluated by June, another first time evaluator, and Leesa.

In preparation for the Area Conference, Annette delivered her contest speech, and was given a group evaluation, which was led by Liz Wo. We wish Annette success in the  speech contest, as well as the evaluation contest. Also Dave in the table topics contest.

The business session was also conducted by Annette. The main business was the position of treasurer, as Kylie is taking an extended break from Toastmasters, because of other commitments.  We were unable to elect a new treasurer at the meeting, but don't worry, someone has come forward since to take on the position. Stay tuned!

Grammarian Kylie commented on the ums & aahs as well as some good word usage during the meeting.

Robert's guide dog Homer took control of the lectern for a few minutes.

John S was General Evaluator. He suggested putting "6.30 pm for 7 pm" on the programme, as quite a few members had turned up right on 7 pm. He also stressed the need to have a copy of the minutes at the business session and for executive members to send a report if they could not be present.

Annette closed the meeting & presented the evening's awards to Anne (Best Table Topic,) John T (Best Speech,) Leesa (Best Evaluation,) Amanda (Personal Best,) & Rhys (Best Contribution,)

Sorry, I didn't get a photo. My battery had gone flat taking photos of possums & I forgot to take a spare one.)

Don't forget there are 5 Tuesdays in this month, so it will be an extra week till the next meeting on the 13th November.

Meanwhile, see you at the Area Conference on Saturday.

Meeting 886 "School's Out."

Three new members were inducted last meeting. Terry and Kel, who have been previously been Toastmasters in other clubs, and Ralph, a brand new Toastmaster.

Ralph's first assignment was to present the Toastmasters mission statement. The toast was proposed by Leesa.
Jonathon

Jonathon's Quote for the evening was one from Dr Suess,
"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer
yourself any direction you chose....."

Round Robin Master June asked us to tell what talents we possessed. We discovered that our club consists of people with many varied and amusing talents.

In keeping with the theme, Liz We's Table Topics were all school related, eg  "What was your school motto?" "Describe your last day at school." and "What was your favourite holiday break?" Robert, Jonathon and Leesa came up with entertaining answers.

Kel's Table Topics were a bit more involved. He presented the scenario of a road trip and asked Marlene, Kylie and Jennine to speak about  "A road trip from hell, " Who would you like to listen to on the car pod" and "What genre of music" would you like to listen to?"
Nicole (great to see her back.)
Terry

The Table Topics were evaluated by Nicole and
Terry.

Harry

Harry's speech, using vocal variety was "The Amazing Human Brain."  and was full of fascinating information.

Kel presented his Ice Breaker. He is working through his second Competent Communicator Manual.

Ernie's speech was "The Best Advice I Ever Had." Ernie demonstrated some French polishing and passed his work around for us to inspect.

The speeches were evaluated by Rhys, Dave and Jonathon.

Dave's raffle was a beautiful shawl that his wife Sandy had made. Dave called on Inge to model it. It was won by Terry, who was delighted to have something he could use as a gift.

Robert told a funny story about falling into a hole when out walking with his dog.
Inge gave us some interesting information on coffee in a "Did you know?" session.

Timekeeper Amanda warned that the meeting was running behind time. (This was not Amanda's fault.)
Jennine was Listening Master and her clever questions managed to collect  many fines to help fill the coffers.

The General Evaluation was presented by Kylie, who had some helpful suggestions.

Awards for the evening went to Kel (Personal Best,) Jennine (Best Table Topic,) Harry  (Best Speech,) Jonathon (Best Evaluation,) and Marlene (Best Contribution.)

Next meeting will be our Evaluation and International Speech Contest.

Meeting 885 11th Sept 2012 "Spring"

We were delighted to welcome 6 guests to our meeting, Alan, Clemencia, Jaya & Christine, Kel and Terry.

Before the meeting, Toastmaster Trish asked each of us what "Spring" meant to us, and she used this in her  introductions.
John T's word for the evening was "blossom" and it was wonderful to see how our members are blossoming in their communication skills.

In the absence of a Table Topics Master, Robert, John T, Maureen and Harry each provided  a spring related topic. Can't remember who their "victims" were, but they were evaluated by Kylie.

June presented her 3rd speech, "People Watching."  It was a fascinating topic, which she brought to life with animated gestures and interesting anecdotes. It was evaluated by Marlene.

Dave's advanced manual speech "The Dirt on Clean" was an interesting & amusing account of  hygiene over the ages. Jonathon, in his evaluation was able to suggest how Dave could take his excellent speech to an even higher level.

Liz Wo presented an educational session on evaluating, which was of great benefit to all.

Round Robin Master Robert asked "What is your favourite fruit or flower?"  There were some amusing answers.

The Business Session was conducted by Jennine. It was her first time as chairman, but she handled it efficiently. The main business was about  Area Conference, to be held n the 3rd November.
Amanda

Grammarian Amanda commented on correct word usage during the meeting.

Harry gave a constructive and thorough General Evaluation despite a challenging interruption from outside the room.

Marlene's raffle, Bromeliad plants and a book on indoor plants was won by Ernie. There was a second prize, a recipe book, which went to Jennine.

The evenings awards went to  Jonathon (Best Evaluation,) June (Personal Best,) Dave (Best Speech,) Trish (Best Contribution) and Jennine (Best Table Topics.)

Meeting 884 on 28 August

A great turnout for our Table Topics and Humorous Speech Contests, with six guests - Ralph (to be inducted next meeting), Kel (an experienced Toastmaster, having been a member of other clubs, and intending to join Sandgate), Terry (also joining soon), Vicki, Darryl and Belinda - welcome!

Four members contested Table Topics (Ernie, Dave, Maureen and Trish), and two in Humorous Speech (Trish and John T) - a wonderful demonstration of the skills of Sandgate Club.

Trish and Maureen placed first and second, respectively, in the Table Topics Contest.

Jonathon performed admirably as Contest Chairman, and Liz Wo as chief judge trained a few club members in the art of judging.

Trish placed first in the Humorous Speech Contest, so will represent Sandgate in Humorous Speech and Table Topics at the Area Contest on 3 November at Eventide. Please mark the date in your diary so you can support Trish on this informative and fun Toastmaster event.

Supper and chat (impromptu speaking)

The raffle was very happily won by Marlene, a very interesting game donated by Liz We.

A reminder that semi-annual fees are due between now and 25 September (at the latest). Members should have received an invoice - please contact Kylie, Treasurer, with any questions.

Next meeting is Tuesday 11 September.

Meeting 883 "The Ekka"

It was Ekka week in Brisbane, so of course the theme of our meeting was The Ekka.   Toastmaster Dave kept us entertained between meeting segments with interesting snippets of information about the Ekka, which is the popular name for the Royal Queensland Show.

Toastmaster Dave
We were pleased to welcome 6 guests. Robert, Peter, Ben. and Ralph, whom we had met at the Einbunpin Festival, also Janelle who had been to a previous meeting, and Maureen's daughter, Nicole.

Here are a few photos from the meeting.

Einbunpin Festival 2012

Thanks to all who helped with our Information Stall at the Einbunpin Festival. It was a lovely sunny day. Many people stopped and  were given information about Toastmasters. We will know just how successful it was when they come along to one of our meetings.

Rhys, Melissa & Elizabeth with inquirers
Jennine, Amanda & Ernie
Robert & Maureen with inquirer

Even Homer attracted attention.

All kinds of people passed by.

Sharyn Rhys & Jonathon packed up.
