Meeting 1109 - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars

With such an interesting theme, this meeting was filled with rock star facts and lots of humour.

President Paul opened the Meeting and welcomed guest George, who was introduced by Arun.

Toastmaster Chris H. took control and regaled the audience with the history of David Bowie and his alter ego Ziggy Stardust.

The Toast was presented by Tony - to "Trying New Things".

This was followed by the Word for the evening which was Eponym which was by Marlene. This proved to be a challenge for most, even with the adjectives eponymous and eponymic.

Round Robin by Gail provided an interesting topic of "What is the best live performance you have seen".

Speeches:

Arun was introduced by Evaluator John T. The speech title was "Height of Innocence" and was part of the Storytelling level of Pathways.

Evaluator Peter D. introduced Trevor, with a speech entitled "There's a Westerner in the Village".

Trish presented a speech from Level 3 - "They Will Come". This was evaluated by Jonathon via Zoom.

Timing was shared by Hazel and Dan, and they both did an excellent job of keeping the Meeting on track.

The raffle by Marlene was a raffle for our times - Covid preparedness that - with a good supply of items in short supply at the moment. Toilet rolls, tissues, masks and hand sanitizer. The winner was Arun.

Gokul presented an update on the requirements for the stall at Einbunpin Festival for next Sunday.

Table Topics by both Paul and Peter B. was another lively session - a great selection of topics for Hazel, Gail, Peter D and Peter B.

The evaluations of Table Topics by Tony and Gokul gave good suggestions with an entertaining insight into methods of presentation.

Change-Over Dinner - "New Beginnings"

 


A warm welcome by Out Going President Trish began the evening at Sandgate Social venue.

Trish outlined the achievements of the past year and congratulated all Members for a great effort despite the many challenges and changes.

John T. conducted the Round Robin by asking "What has been a major change in your life".

The Invocation by Narelle heralded the commencement of dinner.

During dinner, a fun quiz was provided by Trish, with multi choice answers.

Table Topics were presented by Jonathon and Dan, and participants were Peter D, Suresh, Gokul, David, Marlene and Hazel.

As Out Going Area Director, Mark dismissed and thanked the 2021/2022 Executive Officers.

This was followed by the induction of the 2022/2023 Officers by Incoming Area Director Suresh.

Meeting 1108 "Money, Money, Money."


It was a cold night, but there was plenty of warm friendship and fun at our meeting. Gokul, who will be Sergeant at Arms in the coming new Toastmasters year had some practice in the role as he called the meeting to order.

President Trish (attending on Zoom) announced the happy news that our club has earned enough points to gain Presidents Distinguished Club status (the highest rating) for the third year in a row. Woohoo!!

What better theme for the end of the financial year than "Money?" The theme, chosen by Toastmaster of the evening Jonathon was carried out during the meeting. Monica (Online) proposed a theme related toast. Peter D chose "Thrift" as the word of the evening.

Round Robin Master Arun asked, if money was not a criteria, what one thing would you like to buy? There were some interesting answers.

There were three prepared speeches. Peter B presented his Icebreaker speech, an inspiring account of his life's journey and was evaluated by Monica.

John's speech "Mentoring for a Better World" was a level 2 speech in the “Visionary Communication” path. It was about the  work of A.I.M.E, which is an acronym for the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience.

Trevor presented a "Storytelling" speech from the Persuasive Influence path. He told us about some of his experiences in Toastmasters Clubs in Thailand. It was evaluated by Marlene.

Supper was provided by Leanne and Marlene. Leanne's Corn Relish Dip was very popular.

Keeping to the theme, Table Topics were presented by Paul and Gail.  
Peter D, Arun, Christiane, Gokul, Marlene and Peter B were called on to each speak for 2 minutes on money related topics. 

They were evaluated by Narelle and Trish.

Christiane's raffle was won by Trevor. He was delighted with the silver and gold coins, not to mention the safeguard against another Covid panic - a roll of toilet paper!

Grammarian Paul mentioned some colourful phrases and words used during the meeting.

Gail presented a helpful General Evaluation of the entire meeting.

Everyone did so well, it was difficult to pick the award winners for the evening. John and Trevor tied for "Best Speech," while Christiane, Peter B, and Gokul tied for "Best Table Topic." Leanne won "Best Evaluation" and Peter B was "Most Improved."
